In my practice as a parenting mentor, clients often ask me for toys and/or activities they can easily travel with, especially during the busier summer months. The stitching block is one of my favorites, as it comes all in one piece and is a real skill-booster for the little ones.
Developed in Prague, this handmade wooden block allows your child to practice weaving a thread through its many holes, coming up with whatever patterns or designs appeal to them. This is a great introduction to sewing without any of the hazards of using a needle.
In the process of playing with the stitching block, your child will exercise concentration as well as their fine motor skills and dexterity. As they precisely try to move the thread through the holes of the stitching block, they will refine their eye-hand coordination.
Whether used at home, on an airplane or in the car, this toy is quiet. Without any of the noises or sounds you might find with a battery-operated toy, this is a great alternative and a much more enriching activity than handing your child an iPad!
P.S. Would you like my support and guidance setting-up your Montessori home? If, yes then go ahead and schedule a ‘Discovery Session’ with me. It’s free and you’ll know if we are a good fit. 😉
*The appropriate age will depend on the child’s individual development and abilities as well as interest. These are all approximate ages; it is essential to follow your child’s needs by learning to observe them.

¡de nada!
Hello Jeanne-Marie,
Can you advise where we could order one of these? Doesn’t seem to be a common toy to stumble upon through regular channels…
Thank you!
Marina, yes it’s a wonderful item. Not sure where you are located… I found it on Amazon http://amzn.to/2roklSn
and I have also seen alternative ones made by local artisan when traveling.
Let me know if you find one. Be well
Thank you so much Jeanne-Marie, this has helped a lot! I am in Canada and searched for something like that on our local amazon and couldn’t find it. But as soon as you directed me to the exact name of it, I found it right away and other cute options as well. I have ordered it for my almost 1-year old godson hoping it will keep him busy and give his mommy a break 🙂
