Autogenic Respiratory Training was developed in the 70’s by Italian obstetrician Umberto Piscicelli, based on the relaxation response work of German psychologist Schultz. This method (often abbreviated as RAT, but we prefer ART) guides the laboring woman to breathe in the same pattern as when she sleeps, ensuring a deep level of relaxation and oxygenation.
The difference between ART and other methods of preparation for childbirth is that ART encourages a woman to focus on what is actually happening in her body during labor, while effectively managing her emotions and physical discomfort. The central idea is that body and mind can stay relaxed and aware even when the womb is contracting. A calm and well-oxygenated woman does not loose her muscle strength and energy during labor, so she can use it when it is needed the most—during the pushing phase.
To learn this technique, a woman needs to prepare her mind and body in the months leading up to the birth. Our eight-week course gives you the training necessary to have a successful natural birth in any setting. The ART training is given together with a parenting workshop that prepares you to welcome your baby into your home. This workshop covers the following topics:
